Why Matches Beat Lighters (and Why Our Box Has a Strike Strip)
Ask a cigar lover how to light a good cigar and they'll tell you: never with a cheap butane flame directly on the tobacco. Cannabis deserves the same respect — especially in a mini format designed entirely around the fresh first light. Here's the case for matches, and why we built them into every Be One Kind pack.
The first puff is the best puff — don't taint it
The opening draw of a fresh pre-roll carries the brightest terpenes of the entire session. A butane lighter held directly to the tip can carry combustion byproducts into exactly that puff, and the aggressive, concentrated flame tends to scorch the tip rather than toast it. A wooden match — struck, allowed a second for the sulfur head to burn off, then touched gently to the tip while you rotate — lights the paper and flower evenly with a softer flame. The difference isn't imaginary; it's the same reason sommeliers of the cigar world have insisted on matches (or cedar spills) for a century.
The one rule: let the match head burn past the sulfur before lighting. Two seconds. Then light off the wood flame.
The practical case
Every smoker knows the ritual failure mode: the moment is right, the pre-roll is out, and the lighter is… in the other jacket. Lighters are the most borrowed, most lost object in cannabis culture. That's why every Be One Kind matchbox ships with matches inside and a strike strip on the side of the box — the pack is self-igniting. Trailhead, rooftop, beach chair: if you have the pack, you have fire. It's also why the box is shaped like what it is. We didn't put minis in a matchbox as a design gimmick; a matchbox is simply the correct object — crush-proof, pocket-sized, resealable, and it lights its own contents.
The sustainability case
A disposable butane lighter is a single-use plastic shell around pressurized fossil fuel, and billions of them end up in landfills. A wooden match is a splinter of wood that burns to ash. Our packaging follows the same logic: biodegradable craft paper, printed minimally, with nothing inside the box that outlives the product. If the future of cannabis is smoking better instead of smoking more, it should also leave less behind.
How to light a mini properly (30 seconds)
Strike the match and let the sulfur burn off. Hold the mini at a slight angle, flame just below the tip — not engulfing it — and rotate slowly for two or three seconds until the tip glows evenly. Take gentle first draws rather than one hard pull. An even light from the start is the difference between a mini that burns clean to the end and one that canoes. (With a 0.35g mini there's no relight to worry about — that's the point of the format.)
FAQ
Do matches really change the taste of a joint?
The first few puffs, yes — a butane flame applied directly can scorch the tip and carry byproducts into the brightest-terpene draws. Let a match's sulfur burn off first and light from the wood flame.
Why do Be One Kind boxes have a strike strip?
So the pack is self-lighting: matches inside, striker on the side. No lighter required, ever.
Are matches better than hemp wick?
Hemp wick is also excellent (light the wick with anything, then light the joint from the wick). Matches win on convenience — they're in the box.
Is the packaging really biodegradable?
Yes — craft paper construction designed to break down, versus plastic tubes and disposable lighters that persist for decades.
